TECHNICAL BINDER: Aluminum Finish Options

Aluminum Finish Options for Structural Glass Projects:
Painted and Anodized

Aluminum framing is available in two finish options:

  • Fluoropolymer (painted) finishes
Fluoropolymer finishes are known by the trade names Duranar® by PPG and Fluropon® by Valspar. These finishes contain a 70% PVDF (Kynar 500®) resin, and meet AAMA 2605 specification.

The fluoropolymer finish is applied in a two-coat, three-coat, and four-coat application depending upon finish color being applied.
    • Two-coat applications consist of a primer coat, and a color coat.
    • Three-coat applications consist of a primer coat, a color coat, and a clear coat.
    • Four coat applications consist of a primer coat, a barrier coat, a color coat, and a clear coat.

One of the advantages of fluropolymer finishes is that they come in a wide variety of colors.

Acroflur® PVDF fluoropolymer coatings meet the AAMA 2604 weathering specifications of less than 5 delta E units color fade, maximum chalk rating of 8, and greater than 50% gloss retention after five years of exposure in south Florida. Acroflur® is perfect for projects requiring mar-resistant, long-term durability. 50% Kynar® PVDF based coatings provided a hard surface finish with excellent color fade and chalk resistance qualities.

  • Anodized finishes
Anodized finishes are applied by submersing the aluminum extrusion into an acidic solution, and applying an electrical current to the extrusion. The final color is determined by the length of time that the extrusion is left in the solution with the current applied to it. Color choices are limited with Anodized finishes.

Due to the electrical process used in production, the finish becomes infused to the aluminum, thus making it an extremely hard, durable, corrosion resistant, and long-lasting aluminum oxide finish. The finish is a minimum of .07 mil thick in compliance with AAMA 607.1.
